A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Julian, California, this morning at 10:08 a.m. PDT, jolting much of Southern California. The quake, centered just 2.5 miles south of the small town in eastern San Diego County, was linked to the Elsinore Fault—part of the broader San Andreas Fault system.

Tremors were felt as far as Los Angeles and Long Beach, with residents reporting strong, jolting shakes. No major injuries or structural damage have been reported, but at least seven minor aftershocks followed.

In a striking scene at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, a herd of elephants formed an “alert circle” to shield their young—an instinctive defense behavior triggered by the shaking. The moment was caught on security footage and quickly went viral.

Transit systems briefly paused operations for safety checks, and seismologists warn more aftershocks may follow.
